Each year, over 5.5 lakh patients are diagnosed with Head & Neck Cancers. These cancers make for 27.5% of all cancers in India, as against only 4% in the West. Worse, the incidence of these cancers continues to rise because of the lifestyle related habits of chewing ghutka, using masheri and khaini, and smoking beedies and cigarettes.

For such a high prevalence, it is truly unfortunate that facilities for the treatment of Head & Neck Cancers are grossly inadequate. So is the availability of a trained workforce. And ENT departments in our medical colleges do not have surgeons trained to deal with cancers of the oral cavity, throat and voice box.

HNCII believed India needed to develop a dedicated Head & Neck Cancer Institute that will address all issues related to the disease.

  • Preventive, promotive, therapeutic and rehabilitative services.
  • Programs to assist the development of Head & Neck Surgery in teaching hospitals.
  • Conducting research to address the numerous unresolved issues pertaining to these cancers, with special emphasis on relevance to the Indian setting.

The Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Head & Neck Cancer Institute of India, a division of the CanCare Trust, is committed to contribute the problems of Head & Neck Cancer in India – its high incidence and the lack of human and material resources.

The institute’s main focus will be to excel in the area of service, education and research in Head & Neck Cancers. And offering state-of-the-art comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation under one roof at affordable prices, will remain its central activity.

Around this service component, post graduate education and training programs in Head & Neck Oncology will be developed to address the problem of lack of trained doctors in the field. As also to address the numerous unresolved issues in this area of science, and give India a leadership status in Head & Neck Cancers.
